MacLehose Trail Extreme Night Hike
This plan follows an "extreme challenger" approach: no taxi, starting on foot from Pak Tam Chung at the beginning of MacLehose Trail. To reach East Dam about 30 minutes after sunrise (around 07:17), you set off in the small hours for a night stretch along Section 1 (Wan Tsai Road), then continue through Section 2 to Pak Tam Au.

Night stretch: Pak Tam Chung to East Dam

Section: MacLehose Trail Section 1 (Wan Tsai Road) Distance: ~10 km (all paved) Pace: 4.5–5 km/h Time: ~2 hours 15 minutes There are no street lights; a head torch or strong flashlight with enough battery is essential. It can be windy and cold by the reservoir in the early hours—bring a windproof layer.

Key notes

Getting to the start: No buses run to Pak Tam Chung in the small hours. You may need a taxi from Sai Kung town or a pre-booked car. Mindset: The 10 km of paved road in the dark can feel long; keep a steady pace and breathing. East Dam: Arriving on foot before most visitors gives a rare sense of isolation and scale—in line with the story’s mood. "The world is wide—where is home? The road is underfoot, the heart at the horizon."
